GUARDIAN FROM THE NILE – The ancient Egyptian city of Aswan stood on the banks of the Nile and from there exported Egyptian goods and art objects to the world. One object, the image of a Sphinx, so inspired the Greeks who visited Aswan that they created their own. The Greek version of the sphinx was given the face of a woman, the body of a lioness, and the wings of an eagle. The Aswan Sphinx is a copy of that ancient Greek creation, one that stood atop a 12 meter column guarding the Temple of Apollo at Delphi.
