Our story begins in Sydney, Australia. In the early 1970’s, our family set up a workshop in Alexandria dedicated to manufacturing hand-forged steel furniture for some of the most reputable stores and designers in the country. After careful deliberation, we decided it was time to fully transition into retail. We opened a store of our own in Surry Hills and supplied directly to the clients. Initially, like so many ambitious start-ups in limited marketplaces, we struggled. In order to grow and solidify as a mainstay in the furniture industry, we needed a distinguishable quality that set us apart from the competition. We diversified our stock-range by importing Italian furniture to sell alongside our own manufactured products. And it proved to be the right move.

By the late 1970’s our reach had extended to stores operating in Artarmon, Richmond — we even crossed the border into Queensland’s Fortitude Valley, expanding our services across the East Coast of Australia. It was around this time we spotted another hole in the market to fill. For almost four decades, architects had been cladding buildings with a unique material called Glass-Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GRC). Twice as strong as concrete and only half the weight, it could be moulded into just about any shape.

We started small, creating limited pieces of GRC moulded furniture in our Alexandria-based workshop. However, increasing demand from customer bases made it abundantly clear we had stumbled upon something revolutionary, and we needed to expand our arsenal. Not only did we expand, we also scaled up significantly. After more careful planning and manoeuvring that caused no shortage of stress, we took another grand leap and set ourselves up internationally, with a factory overseas.

For two generations, Yardware has prided itself on being a family-run affair. This fact emphasises the level of care and passion we pour into the business, and our tight-knit personnel continue to find new ways to evolve and tailor to the needs of an ever-adapting marketplace — coordinating with our overseas artisans working thanklessly to design and mould our GRC products; our variety extends into both the classic and contemporary style without overcompensating or falling out of touch with one or the other. This stylistic versatility makes every visit to our showroom a novel experience for the dedicated homemaker.

Today, what distinguishes us from a marketplace we helped pioneer is our range of mix-and-match decor items that allow clients to customise their own outdoor setting plan so they can be as concise and assured as they need to be before taking the next step.
