THE FANCIFUL ARCHAEOLOGIST – The 18th century Italian archaeologist, Geovanni Battista Piranesi, was famous for his detailed sketches of ancient buildings and monuments, some of which were entirely fanciful. While far from real, many were very beautiful, like this streamline obelisk with its smooth edges, clean lines and exaggerated tapering. The Piranesi Obelisk, standing over two meters tall, will establish a point of wonder in a garden, one that deserves to bear his celebrated if dubious name.
