THE FEMALE GUARDIAN – Napoleon’s campaign into Egypt in 1798 started a craze for all things Egyptian. Overnight, landscape gardeners were required to include Egyptian figures in their garden designs. But the great Sphinx of Luxor was too rough and weather-beaten to feature in a European garden, so a more decorous version was created, one that featured a woman’s proud head and a lioness’s powerful body. Though still called the Luxor Sphinx, this splendid statue is of European origin.
