THE PINEAPPLE CRAZE – When Christopher Columbus brought back a pineapple from central America, he started a craze that lasted four hundred years. Throughout that time pineapples were so expensive they became a symbol of social status and everybody wanted one. People who couldn't afford the real thing put stylised pineapple finials on their gate posts. And the tradition lives on today. Pineapple finials are part of garden ornamentation, and not just for gate posts. They make lovely, permanent, outdoor table centrepieces.
