SUBLIME CURVATURE – The Beltrami Urn takes its name from the Italian mathematician, Eugenio Beltrami, who worked on the geometry of curves, or in his own words ‘surfaces of constant curvature’. Not that it would take a mathematician’s eye to appreciate the harmony of this planter’s subtle form. The expanded ring at the centre of the socle on which the urn sits, sets the stage for the curve of the bowl above. This in turn heralds the soft flare of the goblet’s rising stem, above which the changing ‘curvature’ ends in an unadorned lip. The only touches of ornamentation are four, delicate lions’ faces.
