OLD VENICE – The city of Venice is a marvel of Italian Gothic architecture, but before that came the influence of Byzantium and its love of rounded arches and smooth domes. The Venetto Fountain is a product of that old Byzantine influence, before Gothic ornamentation reached Venetian shores. The solid foot, bold throat and restrained shape of the large Venetto Fountain all speak of a time when it was not necessary to be adorned to be beautiful. This fountain needs nothing more than the spill of water down its sides.
