THE HAND-WASHING FOUNTAIN – Handwashing before eating was a claim to gentility in medieval Europe. This gave rise to charming street fountains with hand-washing bowls. Centuries later, indoor plumbing robbed these fountains of their purpose but not their appeal. Across Italy they lived on in atriums, courtyards and gardens. Such is the graceful Helene, a wall-standing fountain with a high curved back and a sweet cherub face dispensing water into a bowl.
